First day at work

So today was my first day at Digital Illusions (Dice). Except for the myriad of new people I was introduced to I found out what project I going to work on. Exciting, indeed! I also found at that my friend Kjell is going to work on the same project which is also nice. If you're wondering I can't talk anything about what the project is about. It's all very hush hush.

Digital Domain, on the move

It seems like Michael Bay has some serious plans for Digital Domain. The company was purchased by the investment group led by Bay and other investments, among them former Miami Doplhins quarterback and Ace Ventura star Dan Marino, this summer.

I'm moving to el Stockholmo!

So it's finally time to move from my old hometown of Ronneby to Stockholm, because of my new job at Dice. I'm really excited! No final word on where I'm going to stay yet, but I've got some options. The ideal situation would be to find a small apartment on Södermalm, walking distance to work, that doesn't cost a fortune.

It's been at rather straining time living with a parent again after having your own home for 6 years. Once you move out it's really hard to come back. I promise...

Drupal update to 4.7

I've updated the Drupal installation to version 4.7. The update didn't go as smoothly as I would have hoped. First of all the frontpage links somehow got borked. It seems it doesn't pick up the base doman name and just links to http://node/xxx when it should be http://www.cumulunimbus.se/node/xxx

Don't know why it does this but the 'read more' links in the teasers works fine. I'm trying to work this out as soon as possible.

My first job!

Woho! I got my first "real" job yesterday. I'm going to work at Digital Illusions in Stockholm with game development. It's gonna be so much fun!

Presently I don't know much more than that but I'll be sure to write more when I do. Priority one now is to get an apartment in Stockholm, preferably before I start working :-)

Kräftskiva in Gränna

A few friends of mine from university, we all started together, have this annual kräftskiva (crayfishparty). This weekend we had our sixth one. This year we met up in Gränna where Lotta's parents own a (or rather two) summer houses with awesome view over Vättern.

I did bring my camera, but as usual I only got photos from before the party, and no actual party shots. Anyway i've put them up on my Flickr account , tagged with "kraftskiva" and "2006".

Ambitious plans

At times in my life when I have nothing important to do I tend to start very large and ambitious projects, which I almost never finish. This is one these periods in my life. I'm searching for work after my graduation, and as anyone who has been in the same position knows, this involves a lot of waiting. So I've picked up something to do.

This time I've set out to learn Houdini. A really nice 3D modeling/effects/rendering package. It's completely node based which is really nice to work with. The hardest part though is to figure out how to do stuff. Really simple stuff. Like merging two nurb surfaces to one. Really frustrating...

My project, and remember I said it was ambitious, is to model a humanoid robot. I was first intrigued when I found my old Chris Cunningham DVD with music videos.

New front page

I've finally decided to drop the Flash frontend. Although pretty and ... flashy ... it seemed a neverending project which only grew in proportion and complexity. Furthermore it became almost impossible to develop with Flash 7, the current version for Linux, in mind.

So I hope this new site frontend, boring but effective will suffice. At least until I get tired of it.

Exile

Since moving back to Ronneby the feeling of being exiled from my old life has increased more and more for each week that pass.

All in all Ronneby is not that bad. Coming back here actually feels kinda nice, and there a familiar feeling every time I go down to town or visit my grandmothers house. Places I had really good times as a kid, or where we got really drunk as teenagers. The really depressing fact of my life here is that I totally lost contact with other people here. Ok, being unemployed has a great deal to do with it as well, but it wouldn't be half as bad if you had people to talk to and hang out with. The only person I'm still in contact with, David, is working in overdrive right now selling broadband equipment. The really cynical thing about this is that I'm not even interested in trying to renew old friendships either.

Volume rendering with Spherical Harmonics

In the winter of 2005 I was lucky to be selected for an internship at the visual effects company Digital Domain in Los Angeles, USA. The internship was a part of my thesis work at the M.Sc. Mediatechnology programme at Linköping University.

My task was to research and develop a new lighting system for Digital Domains proprietary and Academy Award winning volume renderer Storm. After some initial research we choose to use Spherical Harmonics.
